Hair Loss Myths: Hats, Stress, Shampoo and Your Grandfather
The short answer
Hats and helmets do not cause male pattern baldness; the only documented risk is traction alopecia from constant rubbing or tightly pulled hair under headwear. Stress can trigger a temporary shed called telogen effluvium, which is a different condition from pattern loss and usually recovers. Shampooing does not remove growing hair, and the genes for pattern loss come from both sides of the family rather than only from your mother's father.
Somewhere in your life there is a man who has stopped wearing his favorite cap because of his hairline, a man who blames a stressful quarter at work for his crown, and a man who has been side-eyeing his mother’s father at Thanksgiving for a decade. Sometimes they are the same man. Sometimes he is reading this.
Hair loss folklore is sturdy because every myth contains a grain of something real. Here is what the dermatology societies and the genetics literature actually say about each one, so you can put the cap back on.

Do hats or helmets cause hair loss?
No, with one narrow exception. Male pattern baldness is a hereditary condition driven by androgens acting on genetically sensitive follicles, and it is the most common cause of hair loss worldwide 13. Neither the AAD’s list of causes nor Mayo Clinic’s mentions hats, and the follicles under a cap get the same blood supply and the same hormones as the ones under open air 13.
The exception is mechanical. The AAD notes that the constant rubbing of a hat, head scarf or other covering can lead to traction alopecia, especially if you pull your hair back tightly before covering it, and it flags military personnel as a higher-risk group 2. That is friction and pulling rather than pattern baldness, and it shows up as broken hairs, a receding edge and sometimes stinging or tenderness where the pressure sits 2. A helmet that fits and comes off at the end of the ride is not on the list.
If the bald spot appeared where the helmet sits, the helmet is where you noticed it. The crown and hairline are where pattern loss starts regardless 3.
Does stress cause hair loss?
Stress can cause a shed, and the shed is real, but it is a different condition. The AAD describes excessive shedding after severe stress, high fever, surgery, serious illness or major weight loss as telogen effluvium: many follicles shift into their resting phase at once, and most people notice the extra hairs a few months after the event 4.
The distinguishing features are timing and pattern. A stress shed is diffuse, comes on suddenly, follows an identifiable event, and tends to recover within about 6 to 9 months once the trigger has passed 4. Male pattern baldness is gradual, patterned at the temples and crown, and does not recover on its own 13. Mayo Clinic lists stress as a risk factor, and the two can overlap: a shed can unmask thinning that was already there, which is often how the myth gets its evidence 3.

Does shampooing too often cause hair loss?
No. Everyone sheds about 50 to 100 hairs a day, and those hairs have already finished growing and detached at the root before they ever meet water 34. Shampooing, brushing and towel-drying collect them all in one place at one time, which is why the drain on wash day looks like a verdict. Skipping a wash does not save the hairs; it just spreads them across your pillow instead.
The AAD’s advice on frequency has nothing to do with hair loss. Men with straight hair and an oily scalp may want to shampoo every day, while dry, textured, curly or thick hair can be washed less often as needed 5. Rough handling is a different story: aggressive brushing, tight styles and chemical treatments can break or pull hair, but that is damage to the shaft and the follicle from force rather than from soap 1. Is baldness inherited from your mother’s father?
Partly, and the partly is where the myth came from. The AR gene, which makes the androgen receptor that responds to DHT, is the one gene confirmed to be involved in pattern hair loss, and it sits on the X chromosome 67. Men get their X chromosome from their mothers, so the family lore about checking the maternal grandfather has a real gene behind it.
It is one gene among many. MedlinePlus Genetics says researchers suspect variants in several genes play a role, that the inheritance pattern is unclear because many genetic and environmental factors are likely involved, and that the condition clusters in families on the whole, with any close relative counting as a risk factor 6. StatPearls calls male pattern baldness polygenic with varying penetrance, influenced by both maternal and paternal genes, and notes that sons of fathers who went bald carry a substantially higher relative risk 8. Your father’s hairline is evidence too. So is your own, which a set of Trail Marker photos will record more honestly than the family album.
When to talk to a clinician
Myths are harmless until they delay a diagnosis. Talk to a clinician if hair is coming out in handfuls a few months after an illness, surgery or major stress, since a shed may need its trigger checked; if you see round smooth patches, scaling, redness or soreness; or if hair loss is sudden rather than gradual 34. Scalp pain, stinging or broken hairs under a tight style or helmet also deserve a look before traction becomes permanent 2.

Do hats cause hair loss?

Like hats, a helmet can only contribute to traction or friction damage if it is tight and worn constantly over pulled-back hair, and the AAD notes military personnel have a higher risk of traction alopecia. Pattern loss under a helmet is happening because of genetics, and the helmet is just where you noticed it.
Can stress make you go bald?
Severe stress can trigger telogen effluvium, a diffuse shed that starts a few months after the event and usually recovers within about 6 to 9 months once the trigger passes. That is a different process from male pattern baldness, which is genetic and progressive. Stress does not create a receding hairline, though a shed can make existing thinning more noticeable.
Does washing your hair every day cause hair loss?
